AABB Installs David R. Green as Association President During Virtual Annual Meeting

AABB (formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks) announced that David R. Green, MSA, began his term as President of the Association for the 2020-2021 term today, the last day of the 2020 AABB Virtual Annual Meeting. Green succeeds Beth Shaz, MD.

“I have been a member of AABB for almost 30 years. It is truly an honor to continue to serve the transfusion medicine and biotherapies community now as President of this Association,” said Green. “I am particularly impressed at how quickly our community has been able to adapt and overcome so many of the challenges posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and look forward to working with AABB members as we continue to ensure the safety of donors and patients worldwide during these demanding times.”

Green has served as Vitalant President & CEO since 2016, after two years as blood services division president. Before joining Vitalant, Green served as president and CEO for Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center (MVRBC) for nearly 15 years. Previously, he also served with the American Red Cross for nine years, including an assignment as principal officer for the Southeast Blood Region. He is past chair for Blood Centers of America, past president for America’s Blood Centers and current chair for the Alliance of Blood Operators, a network of over 90 blood operators from North America, Europe and Australia.

Before his career in blood services, Green served nine years as an active duty U.S. Army combat arms officer in a variety of command and staff assignments following graduation from Knox College, in Galesburg, Ill. He received his master’s degree in administration from Central Michigan University while on active duty and, subsequently, served three years in the Illinois National Guard, attaining the rank of major.

AABB members also elected Dana Devine, PhD, as President-Elect; Brian Gannon, MBA, as Vice President; and Aaron Tobian, MD, PhD, as Secretary. Delisa English, MBA; Magali Fontaine, MD, PhD; Phil Accooe, MLS(ASCP)SBB, CLS; Celina Montemayor-Garcia, MD, PhD; and Meghan Delaney, DO, MPH, were elected as at-large directors. In addition, Green appointed OneBlood CEO John Murphy as the Treasurer of the Board.
