Job Description Summary:


The Director of Development promotes and fosters strategic relationships with individuals and community organizations while seeking new funds in support of the Universities institutional and priorities, with demonstrated experience working with health-related initiatives at the university level. The incumbent will maintain a special emphasis on local and regional individuals relating to health care. In collaboration with the Associate Vice President, Vice President, President, and University leadership, research and identify funders to support the emerging College of Health and Community Well-Being. Play an active role in helping to research, qualify, contact and cultivate new, mutually beneficial relationships throughout Inland Southern California, the broader region, and in areas where alumni are located. Develop partnerships of mutual benefit with organizations and the University that generate significant and transformational funding for the University, with a specific focus on the emerging health related initiatives.

Specific Duties:


• The Director of Development will be mission-driven, creative, proactive, and entrepreneurial strategic thinker with strong communication skills. The incumbent will play a key role in ensuring La Verne reaches fundraising goals, manage a comprehensive strategic fundraising plan to establish a major-gifts-focused culture of philanthropy across the institution, lead new levels of engagement with current and prospective donors, and work towards significantly increasing contributed revenue to meet the demand of the organization’s growth.


• The Director of Development is responsible for the integrated leadership of philanthropic fundraising for La Verne, reports to the Associate Vice President for University Advancement and Campaign Director, and acts as a key strategic partner to the Associate VPUA and senior leadership. The Director of Development collaborates closely across the organization to align fundraising in support of La Verne’s mission, vision, values, and comprehensive campaign priorities.


• The Director of Development will create and implement an annual fundraising development plan to meet budgeted goals, working adaptively as the organization and donor portfolio grows and managing the donor cycle (research, cultivate, ask, steward), foster ongoing connections and partnerships, including reunion giving programs, setting goals for each donor, assigning and managing appropriate “ask” teams, events, and activities.


• The incumbent will develop effective and persuasive fundraising materials that articulate the University’s mission and programs with a strong case for support; Conduct donor prospect research, prepare briefing reports, and recommend strategies, acting as a consultant for President, VPUA, and Executive Team as needed. Researches data for proposal development, develops, prepares and presents formal fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects. Assume and achieve fundraising financial and activity goals set annually, and ensure compliance with all University fundraising policies, goals and procedures, including responsible for following all protocols for prospect and donor management established and implemented by University Advancement. Represents the University of La Verne Advancement at professional and university meetings, seminars and conferences for professional development. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.


Minimum Qualifications:


• Bachelor’s Degree


• The successful candidate must have a minimum of three to five years of experience in fundraising, preferably in a higher education setting. They should be able to demonstrate successful experience and effectiveness in prospect identification, relationship building, and solicitation.


• The successful candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal and organizational skills; have a strong attention to detail; be goal and results-oriented; self-motivated; and possess the ability to make independent decisions. He/she must be a collaborative and team-oriented individual; demonstrate sound judgment when dealing with a wide range of relationships and situations; and possess the ability to maintain enthusiasm for hard work, changing priorities, and multiple deadlines. He/she must have the ability to interact well with a diverse community of faculty, students, alumni, business leaders, and other external constituents.

Preferred Qualifications:


• Master’s Degree

• Working Knowledge of Banner Advancement

• Healthcare Related Work Experience

• Fundraising Seminars or Workshop Attendance
