Assistant or Associate Professor of Health Policy and Addiction Studies

Penn State Harrisburg, a comprehensive College of The Pennsylvania State University, one of the largest and most widely recognized institutions in the nation, invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank in Health Policy. Competitive candidates will possess earned doctorate in a related discipline and have exceptional records of research achievement and teaching accomplishments to qualify them for appointment at appropriate rank in the School of Public Affairs of the College. The preferred starting date for this 36-week position is August 13, 2021.

This position is part of the Penn State's recently launched, university-wide Consortium to Combat Substance Abuse (CCSA); https://CombatSubstanceAbuse.ssri.psu.edu, which seeks colleagues whose research interests and expertise fit within the broad areas of pathways to addiction, criminal justice, and/or spillover effects of substance abuse to families and communities. Our expectation is that these new colleagues will work actively to build a powerful inter-disciplinary community of scholars focused on illuminating the multi-level processes that give rise to addiction; designing, implementing, evaluating, and disseminating novel, evidence-based approaches for prevention of, treatment for, and recovery from addiction; identifying and ameliorating the effects of substance misuse on individuals, families and communities; and translating research findings into evidence-based practices, programs, and policies. The successful applicant can also work with faculty from across the University and beyond to translate research findings into economic and policy-relevant language and spur policy change.

The selected individual's duties will include faculty responsibilities in the areas of research, teaching, and service, and as well as providing leadership and vision for research growth in health policy and addiction studies. As a faculty member, the individual is expected to help build academic excellence. As a health and addiction policy research leader, the individual will be responsible for developing interdisciplinary research teams, organizing and coordinating efforts to secure external funding, and performing health and addiction related policy research. Additional duties may include preparing and presenting reports, providing policy recommendations, and aligning activities with relevant strategic objectives of the College and the University.

Competitive candidates will possess interdisciplinary research experience, strong interpersonal relations and communication skills, and the ability to assemble teams and pursue external funding. We are particularly interested in candidates with research interests and publications spanning two or more major relevant fields of study, such as Behavioral Health, Addiction Studies, Public Policy, Sociology, or others.

Competitive applicants for the position at the rank of Assistant Professor will possess a PhD, and demonstrate strong potential for developing an externally funded, collaborative, interdisciplinary research program as well as the ability to contribute to the college's teaching mission.

Candidates at the rank of Associate Professor should have the same qualifications as the Assistant Professor, as well as a strong track record of scholarly achievement, external funding, and demonstrated success in teaching and service. Ideal candidates will demonstrate expertise in health policy research with emphasis on addiction studies.
