Exactech Receives FDA Clearance To Market Patented Modular Hip Stem

Exactech, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXAC), maker of orthopaedic joint implants, announced that its AcuMatch M Series(TM) patented modular femoral hip prosthesis has been cleared by the FDA for marketing.

"This innovative product makes both the planning and the execution of the surgery more straightforward for the surgeon," said Bill Petty, Exactech chairman and CEO. "The AcuMatch M Series allows use of any of the three components in any combination, giving a surgeon greater flexibility in fitting the implant to the bone. No other product line allows a surgeon this level of convenience in mixing and matching orthopaedic components."

Jose Fernandez, engineering project director for the AcuMatch M Series, said, "The integrity of the mating components has been validated successfully in extensive testing both at Exactech and in independent laboratories. The prosthesis is now being successfully implanted by design team surgeons. A major advantage demonstrated in these initial surgeries is that relatively few components can be combined into 53,280 different configurations to provide a custom fit to the bone."

Gary Miller, vice president, research and development, stated, "The system concept is patented. Extensive additional U.S. and foreign patent applications are pending. The AcuMatch M Series system is in production now. Clinical evaluators will use it initially, and general product rollout will continue through the end of 2000."

Based in Gainesville, Fla., Exactech develops and markets orthopaedic implant devices, related surgical instruments and biologic products to hospitals and physicians. The company manufactures orthopaedic devices at its Gainesville facility. Exactech's orthopaedic products are used in the restoration of bones and joints that have deteriorated as a result of injury or diseases such as arthritis. Exactech contracts with independent sales agents to market its products in the United States and in 13 countries in Europe, Asia, Australia and Latin America.
