The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and The Johns Hopkins Hospital were among the first healthcare facilities to embrace and institutionalize evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing – the practice of using research as the foundation of all nursing decisions and actions in order to improve patient care and reduce errors.
Two of Johns Hopkins’ evidence-based practice experts have created an updated edition of Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice: Model and Guidelines, published by the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI).
Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice: Model and Guidelines, 2nd Edition, by Sandra L. Dearholt, MS, RN, and Deborah Dang, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, is the fully revised and updated edition of the official EBP model and guidelines from The Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. It includes new and fully revised tools and provides more detail and clarity to the model so nurses and nurse educators can implement evidence-based practices immediately. Changes to this edition were based on the Institute of Medicine’s The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health report, the Affordable Care Act of 2011 and feedback from real nurses using Johns Hopkins Nursing’s EBP model in their daily practice.
“The authors of this second edition provide even further depth and clarification to the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice model, which our health system has adopted. The advancements in appraisal methods and translation pathways empower nurses at all levels to participate in the vital work of EBP, from the bedside to the boardroom.”
Sandra L. Dearholt, MS, RN, is assistant director of nursing for the Departments of Neurosciences and Psychiatry Nursing at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. She is a co-author of the first edition of Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Model and Guidelines and a contributing author to Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice: Implementation and Translation.
Deborah Dang, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, is the director of nursing practice, education and research at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. She also holds a joint appointment with the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. In her current position, she developed the strategic vision for EBP at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and built an infrastructure that enabled the transformation to practice based on evidence. She has published, consulted and presented nationally and internationally on the subject of EBP.
