Burke Rehabilitation Hospital Awarded Three-Year Accreditation

The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), an international, independent, nonprofit organization focused on advancing the quality of patient services, has awarded Burke Rehabilitation Hospital another three-year accreditation for its rehabilitation programs in the following areas: Inpatient rehabilitation programs for adults; Inpatient rehabilitation programs for children and adolescents; Brain Injury Program—adults; Brain Injury Program—children and adolescents; Spinal Cord System of Care—adults; Stroke Specialty Program; and Interdisciplinary Outpatient Medical Rehabilitation Programs: Spinal Cord System of Care—adults.

This accreditation decision represents the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to a rehabilitation hospital and demonstrates Burke’s adherence to CARF’s high quality standards. The three-year accreditation comes after a rigorous peer review process where Burke demonstrated to a team of surveyors during an on-site visit that its programs and services are of the highest quality, ensuring the best possible patient outcomes. Burke has held the CARF accreditation since the late 1990s.

Within the final report, CARF congratulated Burke on “the commitment and passion of the medical leadership of the rehabilitation programs and the dedication, compassion, enthusiasm, and skills of the Burke staff.” The organization added that “this level of professional commitment is found throughout the organization. Staff members demonstrate competencies across disciplines and a knowledge base that will allow the [Burke] programs to continue to grow and strengthen the interdisciplinary approach to treatment.”

According to Mary Beth Walsh, MD, CEO and executive medical director of Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, “CARF has become the gold standard within rehabilitation medicine so we are both pleased and proud that CARF has recognized Burke’s outstanding rehabilitation programs and the fact that each has been designed to better the lives of our patients.”

CARF is an independent, nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote quality, value and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process that centers on enhancing the lives of the persons served. Founded in 1966, CARF establishes patient-focused standards to help organizations measure and improve the quality of their programs. For more information about Burke’s inpatient rehabilitation programs, please call (914) 597- 2500 or visit the hospital’s web site at www.burke.org.
